Realisation of strategic objectives in 2009

In 2009, Statkraft achieved several important milestones in the three strategic directions:

Industrial developer in Norway

Norwegian hydropower

In 2009, we increased the capacity at Svartisen power plant. We also started pre-engineering projects in connection with development of new plants, including Nedre Røssåga in Nordland and the Eiriksdalen and Makkoren power plants in Høyanger.

Small-scale power

Seven power plants, totalling 23 MW, were completed in 2009. Eleven small-scale power plants were under construction (38 MW), and licenses have been granted for an additional 19.

District heating

In 2009, we received a license to build a district heating plant in Harstad.

Industry contract agreements

Industrial power agreement with Boliden finalised in 2009. In addition, the energy service concept, under which the access of Norwegian industry to the wholesale market is facilitated, grew.

Wind power in Norway

SAE Wind, established in cooperation with Agder Energi in 2008. The company received its first development license Rogaland County (150 MW) in 2009.

R&D

SAE Wind, established in cooperation with Agder Energi in 2008. The company received its first development license Rogaland County (150 MW) in 2009.

European flexible power producer

Integration of new hydropower, district heating, gas power and biomass plants

In 2009, Statkraft faced a major task in the integration of new activities from the asset swap with E.ON. The Group achieved good integration of both new employees and the new power and heating plants. In total, the E.ON transaction increased Statkraft's production capacity by 2500 MW and the Group gained 217 new employees through the agreement. Statkraft integrated the following new assets:

  • Sweden: 40 hydropower plants and five district heating plants

  • Germany: eleven hydropower plants, two gas-fired power plants and two biomass plants

  • The UK: Three hydropower plants

  • A structured gas storage contract and power delivery agreement

Expanded operating and market activities

In connection with new assets in Sweden, Germany and the UK, the operating and market activities were ramped up.

The establishment of trading activities in the UK

In order to manage our own production assets, we established trading activities in the UK in 2009.

Hydropower France

In 2009, we established an office in Lyon to handle the work to position Statkraft for the award of French hydropower licenses.

Development new gas power plants

In 2009, a solid project portfolio for the development of new gas power was established.

Green global developer

Offshore wind Sheringham Shoal

In 2009, we started the construction of the Sheringham Shoal wind farm off the UK coast in cooperation with Statoil (50/50 ownership). The farm will consist of 88 wind turbines with a total capacity of 317 MW.

Offshore wind Dogger Bank

In January 2010, we were awarded exclusive rights to develop Dogger Bank in cooperation with our partners in Forewind (Statoil, RWE and SSE). The partners own 25 per cent each of the consortium.

Land-based wind

Our first UK wind farm, Alltwalis, came online in 2009.  In addition, we received three licenses for land-based wind power in Sweden, one license in Norway and three in the UK in 2009 and January 2010. We also negotiated an agreement with the industrial company Södra, which includes land-based wind power in Sweden.

Southeast Europe
